This is the photo that the Minneapolis police and the ABC news station are saying is evidence that Mayor Hodges was allegedly throwing up gang signs. With a quick glance at the photo and the news coverage behind it, it would be easy to think and believe that this story, however this is not the case here.
In the video below titled #FreeTheVote, there is a a very different story behind the photo, and in fact shows the point when the photo was taken. You can watch the whole video, or skip to the 0:31-0:41 to see scene from where the Mayor Hodges and Navell Gordon. This video shows Gordon, who admitted to being convicted of crimes and losing his ability to vote, but making an effort to tell others the importance of voting. In the video, they even talk about all the changes that were brought about by voting. He even makes a statement saying he wishes to correct his crimes and one day be able to vote again in a future election for a President of his choice.
Now after watching the entire video or even the segment listed above, it would be quite difficult if not impossible to assume that Mayor Hodges was making gang signs with Mr. Gordon. In fact, it doesn’t truly make any sense that the ABC news station would even let this story go out with the idea that Mayor Hodges was throwing up gang signs, when a quick glance at the video shows an entirely different story. Not only was the news from ABC and comments from the Minneapolis police misleading, there is reason to believe that there is racist intentions behind this.
There is also reason to believe that the Police station is trying to deter the changes that would require all police to wear cameras on them at all time while on duty. The only question I have is, even if that was the case, why choose this story? Of all the topics or photos they could have chosen, why chose the photo of the Mayor Hodges and Mr. Gordon allegedly throwing up gang signs? Is it because he was black? Maybe it was the way he was dressing? Did they not believe that the #FreeTheVote video would not be seen by internet even with it being on youtube?
Also, check out this video where the news attempted, and succeeded to make a 4 year old, look like a thug, but editing the original clip.
There are too many questions to ask, and too few answers, but I will say one thing. If this video was a mistake, it was a mistake that is very costly and could have horrible consequences for those who were misinformed; and if this video was done purposely, it other further proves that racism is not dead and in fact has probably never really gone away. In either scenario, the image of black people will once again be tarnished, and will continue to give people a reason to be very stereotypical, while perpetuating racism. In this day and age we would be embracing each other, and looking forward for change, not playing the same race game that has been done for years.
