My most memorable moment in Guitar Hero history was beating Jordan by Buckethead on expert while my friends cheered on and I felt a sense of achievement when the song finally was over. After being in the red for nearly half the song, and scraping by with a 3 star (was it even possibly to get less than 3 stars?). I also can’t forget playing Free Bird and saying how horrible the song was until the epic 4 minute guitar solo came up, and did I mention that I now have it on my Google Music playlist?
And when Rock Band came out, I became drumming expert and even found myself playing the drums and singing the songs (nerdy, yes I know). But I was hooked, and so were many others! But too much off a good thing, isn’t so good. After semi-annual releases of Guitar Hero, and songs becoming more party oriented such as Green Day songs rather than the challenging songs like Pantera’s Cowboys From Hell, or Hangar 18 from Megadeth, the series became saturated and somewhat uninteresting. But after nearly 4 years of absence, I think it is time to bring back the series. Especially with the release of the new consoles it could be a fresh start for the genre and could make a comeback.
The challenges with this would be the music. Most Guitar Hero and Rock Band fans already played most if not all the games, which would make hard to build up another playlist of great music. Another disheartening aspect would be the peripherals which would have to be bought again, not that I have a problem with it because my old set is completely worn out. Neither Activision or Harmonix has come out and said they will be releasing a game, but neither has said they wont be. The best bet for a music playing game would be RockSmith which in itself is more teaching users to play the real guitar, rather than the 5 colored note schemes many are used to.
I hope the series returns, and I hope I am not the only one who feels this way. Thoughts?
